Limbaugh vs Powell

Former Secretary of Homeland Security Tom Ridge thinks that Republicans should quit sniping at each other and instead, aim their attacks at Democrats. Not entirely bad advice, except he gave it while attacking Rush Limbaugh.

"It does get the base all fired up and he's got a strong following," Ridge continued. "But personally, if he would listen to me and I doubt if he would, the notion is express yourself but let's respect others opinions and let's not be divisive."

Ridge was specifically referring to the dust up between Limbaugh and Colin Powell. I note that while encouraging Limbaugh to be “respectful” he gave Powell a pass.

Since backing Barack Obama for President, Powell has done nothing but lecture Republicans and publicly bash the party he purports to support. Powell is pro-abortion, pro open borders and has stated that Americans want higher taxes and more government. I think it is safe to say that Powell has left the Republican Party in every way except name.

Rush Limbaugh has an audience of 20 million because people trust him to tell it like it is and they agree with his message. If he weren’t so effective Powell, Ridge, et al, would give him the time of day. Limbaugh, along with Coulter, Malkin, Steyn and many others give voice to millions of conservatives who have rejected the squishiness that defines the Ridge/Powell wing of the GOP. Millions are tuning in to Beck, Hannity and O’Reilly and tuning out a rudderless Republican Party. These people are popular because their ideas are popular.

They say that we are in a fight for the soul of the Republican Party. If that is true then I say “no worries.” Moderates don’t have the stomach for it.
